The Frankfurt Radio Symphony is a regular guest in Alsfeld with its chamber concerts. This time, musicians from the orchestra will present Johannes Brahms' two string sextets. The String Sextet in B flat major, Op. 18, and the String Sextet in G major, Op. 36, are among the masterpieces of string chamber music. Alongside the "German Requiem", they ultimately helped the young Brahms achieve his musical breakthrough. Even though he later dismissed them as "long, sentimental pieces," they continue to fascinate with their irresistible tonal appeal and melodic beauty.

Chamber music by an overlooked Hungarian composer, Ernő Dohnányi, whose romantic style contrasted with contemporaries Bartók and Kodály. His inventive Piano Quintet and Sextet, alongside Carl Reinecke's uniquely scored Trio, are discoveries. Dohnányi, a celebrated pianist and conductor, composed with a Brahmsian influence, though his later Sextet expands beyond, reflecting the broad stylistic landscape of the 1930s. Concert duration: ~110 minutes (including intermission).
